Focus on Your Fundamentals:
Perfect Your Pop-Up: Is your pop-up smooth and efficient, or are you still relying on your knees? Focus on a clean, powerful pop-up to get to your feet faster and maintain momentum.
Paddle Power: Work on the strength and efficiency of your paddle stroke. A strong paddle gets you into more waves and allows you to catch waves you might have missed before.
Read the Wave: Learn to look down the line, not at your feet. Understanding how the wave is breaking will inform your decisions on where to go.
Master the Wave Face:
The Take-Off: Practice taking off at different parts of the wave (the shoulder vs. the peak) and not just straight to the beach. A good take-off sets you up for the entire ride.
The Angle of Your Board: Learn to angle your board as you take off. Instead of pointing straight to the beach, turn your board to the left or right to start your ride down the line.
Generate Speed: Use your body to “pump” the board up and down the wave face. This technique, called trimming, is how you maintain speed and stay ahead of the breaking section.
Choose the Right Break for Progression
Move Beyond the Beginners’ Spots: While spots like Crocro Beach are great for learning, look for slightly more challenging, but still manageable, waves. Our instructors will take you to spots like Imourane, Banana Point, or Panorama that offer longer, more organized rides.
Learn to Surf Point Breaks: Morocco is famous for its point breaks. Learning how they work—their consistent take-off zone and predictable direction—is key for intermediate surfers.
Vary Your Surf Spots: Don’t get stuck on one spot. Surfing different types of waves (beach breaks, reefs, points) will make you a more well-rounded surfer.
Get Technical with Your Turns
Bottom Turn is Key: The bottom turn is the most important turn in surfing. It sets up your entire ride. Work on a strong bottom turn to project yourself up the wave for a top turn.
Use Your Upper Body: Learn to use your shoulders, head, and arms to lead your turns. Your body should be a single, fluid unit.
Practice, Practice, Practice: The only way to get better is to put in the time. Our daily lessons and video analysis sessions are designed to provide you with the consistent practice and feedback you need to nail these skills.
The Importance of Feedback & Video Analysis
Get an Instructor’s Eye: Our experienced instructors can spot subtle flaws in your technique that you might not even realize you have. They’ll give you personalized tips on your stance, arm position, and board control.
Video Coaching: Seeing yourself surf on video is a game-changer. It provides objective evidence of what you’re doing right and wrong, helping you visualize your mistakes and correct them much faster.
