At Morocco Surf & Stay, we’ve got you covered with quality rental gear, but if you prefer to bring your own, here’s a guide to choosing the right wetsuit for your Moroccan surf adventure in Tamraght:
Understanding Wetsuit Thickness:
Autumn (September - November):
Water Temperature: Around 19°C – 22°C (66°F – 72°F)
Wetsuit Recommendation:
3/2mm full suit: This is the most common and versatile choice for this period. It provides enough warmth for cooler mornings but won’t overheat you during sunny afternoons.
2mm shorty or spring suit: If you run warm or are visiting late September/early October, a shorty might suffice for peak midday sessions.
Why this season? Great balance of consistent swells, warm weather, and comfortable water.
Winter (December - February):
Water Temperature: Around 16°C – 19°C (61°F – 66°F)
Wetsuit Recommendation:
4/3mm full suit: This is highly recommended for the winter months. It provides ample warmth for longer sessions in the cooler water.
Boots, Hood, Gloves (Optional): While not typically essential for everyone, if you get cold easily or are planning very long sessions, consider bringing thin neoprene boots. Hoods and gloves are rarely needed for most surfers but might be preferred by some.
Why this season? Best for consistent, powerful waves, but water is at its coolest.
Spring (March - May):
Water Temperature: Around 18°C – 21°C (64°F – 70°F)
Wetsuit Recommendation:
3/2mm full suit: Still the go-to for most of spring.
2mm shorty or spring suit: As the days get longer and warmer towards May, a shorty might be sufficient for midday sessions.
Why this season? Beautiful weather, green landscapes, and waves are still consistent, though generally smaller than winter.
Summer (June - August):
Water Temperature: Around 21°C – 23°C (70°F – 74°F)
Wetsuit Recommendation:
Boardshorts, bikini, or rash vest: The water is wonderfully warm, perfect for swimming and learning in light gear.
2mm shorty or long-sleeved spring suit: If you plan on long sessions or get chilly easily, a light 2mm suit can be useful.
Why this season? Ideal for pure relaxation, hot weather, and great for absolute beginners on smaller waves.
Additional Wetsuit Tips:
Fit is Key: A wetsuit should fit snugly, like a second skin, with no baggy areas. Too loose and it won’t keep you warm; too tight and it restricts movement.
Sun Protection: Even with a full suit, apply waterproof sunscreen to exposed areas like your face and neck. A surf hat can also be a good idea.
Rash Vest: Wearing a rash vest underneath your wetsuit can prevent chafing and add a thin layer of warmth. It’s also essential for sun protection if you’re surfing in boardshorts.
